The rivalry continues. Mexico edges US Mens National team in extra time.

Mexico will advance to represent CONCACAF during the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup held in Russia. The last time these heated rivals meet was during the Final of the 2011 Gold Cup. The United States had raced to a dream start going up 2-0 within the first half (goals Michael Bradley and Landon Donovan). Mexico levelled before halftime thru Pablo Barrera and Andres Guardado. Giovanni dos Santos went on to seal the memorable comeback victory for el tri with a stunning second half chip over the US goalkeeper. The drama of their last meeting would continue through in this years CONCACAF CUP.

The match was played in front of a sold out crowd of 93,723 at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena,California. The victory was a clear signal of how the tides have turned in favour of the Mexican National team. Javier Hernandez opened up the scoring in the first half to give the Mexicans the early lead. The US would equalise through Stoke City defender Geoff Cameron off a Michael Bradley set piece. The fixture would head into added time where the drama would unfold. Oribe Peralta scored first for Mexico in the 98th minute, while super-sub Bobby Wood (1.FC Union Berlin) equalised in the 108th minute of play. Paul Aguilar would score a late dramatic volley in the 118th minute of play to seal the historic victory. The next phase of Qualifying for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia is set to begin in November where The USA will hosts St.Vincent & The Grenadines in St.Louis, MO.

Mexico is looking to reinforce its claim as the strongest nation in CONCACAF as it faces off against El Salvador in their World Cup Qualifying opener next month. The US  on the other hand is looking to reestablish why it finished on top of World Cup Qualifying on the road to the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.
